About free languages... I think that matters to all. Even if I am from the rich part of the world I never had money to buy compilers when I got interested in programming.

And now way I would have been able to afford something like Matlab. Also dealing with licenses, maintaining them etc. It is just a hassle. I think most are reluctant to be locked into a corporate system.
