Absolutely, but I am not quite sure how to analyze it. One of my key motivations in writing was to explain both why Europeans came over and why individual Europeans prospered so much more than in Europe. Americans like to claim it was all due to freedom, capitalism and the hard work spirit of Americans. I wanted to point out they when you suddenly got 20 times more land that you could ever hope to own in your home country, then that kind of makes a big difference.

One possible way to analyze slavery in the US is to think of the southern states akin as serving the same role as colonies in old European colonial empires.

What also complicated analysis is they slaves got freed in 1865, but slavery sort of continued under a new name through then the prison convict lease system. Cotten got picked by African American prisoners.

Thus there is perhaps an Americans prison industrial complex to analyze. Probably not today but historically Americans prisons may have been important to the economy as they have a way to continue enslavement of people in a legal form.
