Is this related to going from monolitic servers to micro server architecture? Or is this more about going from running on one larger server to running on lots of commodity hardware?

Since I am not a server guy, I am not that familiar with the terminology and trends going on here. I am just standing at the sideline observing and commenting on what I see from a distance when I am squinting. But I am missing a lot of the details.
