Exactly there is little to moderate the system. We have kind of had that in my native Norway but social media is throwing a lot of that framework out the window.
Instead media reality is being controlled by massive corporate giants which don't really answer to anyone and who define what has become the most crucial platforms for speech in the 21st century.
I am not against social media as such. After all I would be a hypocrite if I was given that I make part of my living writing on platforms such as Medium and Substack.
But identities of us writer should probably be more clearly established, so that if I go around spreading lies that creates a negative reputation for me which I cannot simply shake by creating another account.
Ideally before you write there should be a system to establish an identity. It is fine if this identity is anonymous as long as you can distinguish one anonymous identity from another and attach a reputation.
A blockchain system could be used for this in theory if government were willing to support this idea with legislation. You would need to be able to tie in national identities with such a block chain. It would have been a good thing anyway. Most modern countries today anyway have national electronic IDs to allow things like electronic contract signing. What we need is an interoperable system at an international level which is easy to use.
