Has the AI Revolution Crashed?
Diminishing returns and high energy requirements are grinding AI to a halt or is it?
We are in the midst of an Artificial Intelligence revolution, that much like the internet revolution and smart phone revolution will transform our lives. But as this is happening there are people downplaying the significance as well as people overhyping it.
Recently a Wall Street Journal article, The AI Revolution Is Already Losing Steam, poured some cold water on the AI hype. Will Locket also wrote wrote an article getting into more of the technical limitations AI Is Hitting A Hard Ceiling It Can’t Pass. I noticed on social media that a number of people were quite gleeful about this news. AI has gotten a negative perception from how it has threatened the livelihood for everyone from musicians, graphical artists, actors to truck drivers.
But before getting into what these articles talk about and what they mean for the future of AI, let us clear up some common misconceptions.
What we are getting today is not general intelligence. We are not fully replacing humans any time soon. Many are naive about this and insist that it is only a matter of time to iron out the kinks. No, the limitation of current AI technology is quite fundamental and not something easily solved.
