I am excited about what these chips mean for Apple as a community, not so much for myself. Actually scratch that. I have been using an M1 macbook pro lately and I have really come to like it.
When using it I am reminded of how my Intel Mac Book kept getting my lap uncomfortably hot. How much heavier it was. I don't mind thicker laptops. Actually I want thicker ones to have more port selection. But having a light laptop is actually quite nice and the M1 is so light in your hand and in your bag.
Still for me the big pull of this new Apple Silicon is the potential to expand the Apple customer base. That means more software and services tailored to accomodate Apple users. Perhaps not as big problem as it was. I remember in early days of PowerPC it was not fun to have a Mac because all services ignored you. Connecting to networks, mail and all sorts of stuff was tricky.
Now the only thing that really lacks is more selection of games and a bit better selection of tools for people who are into hardware and electronics. Windows is still better there.
