I don’t think you know this problem as well as you think. The fact that you think it is just people without any clue about economics that purpose this sort of tax shows they you have not followed the discussion of this topic that closely. Many economists have already proposed this kind of tax for many years.

Perhaps best known is Thomas Piketty, who has researched income and wealth inequality extensively. He is perhaps one of the foremost experts on the topic.

What he has shown is that inequality grows without bounds unless one enacts active policies to combat it.

People may shrug and say they don’t care but history has shown us that high levels of inequality has profoundly destabilizing effects on society. When inequality grows large enough, inherited wealth becomes far more important than entrepreneurship.

It also tends to cause massive political polarization and in the worst cases cronyism, failed states or revolution.
