I have never spent much time studying the economic effect of this. I am also uncertain about how to quantify the effect.

I am also not sure if slavery is a smart thing from an economical standpoint. I suspect that if they had freed the African American slaves and paid them a proper salary they would have had better outcomes.

I guess some analysis of the economics and productivity of cotton plantation before and after slavery might give some clues.
