I think I have quite similar views. I prefer a type of mixed economy.

Planned economies themselves such as China and Vietnam have voluntarily reformed towards more mixed economies, so I think few today believe a completely planned economy works.

What makes comparisons difficult in my opinion is the radically different outcomes of China and India. China today has more than 3x the economic output of India per capita.

Yet China has employed far more government planning than India. It seems to me that there is no clear linear relation here. A state with a lot of planned economics seems capable out outcompeting one with less if a some private enterprise is allowed to exist.

The causes of this is likely something requiring a deep analysis. But I suspect that for all the damage the communist revolution caused China it also reset the the starting point for everyone.

In India I think established moneyed elites likely held back development in many regards. But that is just speculation. I will not claim to understand the details of this difference.

China and India also undermines one of my key arguments which is that I believe democracy will long term be better for economic development. But again I have no good idea how the quality of Indian democracy.
