I will disagree that Britain flooded China with opium to weaken it. If that was not covered in school then that is sensible as there is no solid argument to be made that this was the motivation behind the opium trade.

The key reason was that China had a rather arrogant attitude towards the West and insisted there was nothing from the West worth buying. With a bit more open mind the West and China could have had a much more beneficial trade arrangement.
