In my native Norway conservatism is primarily about resistance to change. Or perhaps more accurately wanting slow change. Thus once change has happened they don't necesarily want to change everything back right away.

E.g. the systems built up by social democrats over many years have been large accepted by conservatives. Conservatism is in relation to where society is right now.
