In Norway in the early 1900s we had a brutal police force as the US has today. It got ever more unpopular. Eventually the whole force had to be disbanded. That didn't mean we ended up with no police. Instead a new and more humane police force was built up from scratch.

You cannot force people to choose between an violent unaccountable police force and violent criminals. Yes criminals are bad, but at least they can be prosecuted. A police force out of control is a far more serious matter than a crime wave.

A country needs a functioning police force that citizens can trust, not a feared occupying army.
