Indeed, a lot of people seem to think that because Nazi Germany was a dictatorship, German soldiers must have been blindly following decisions from higher ups. Yet German soldiers and lower ranking officers had more autonomy than their British counterparts from what I have read. The British had very centralized planning and control as far as I have understood. British soldiers got trained for very static type of warfare while Germans got trained for a dynamic battlefield with changing conditions.
