Keep in mind that Russia has won many wars and battles despite doing everything wrong. In the Winter war each Finn buried 5 Russians but Finland still had to sue for peace. Russia wins by being more brutal and willing to sustain much higher losses than others.

In the Great Nordic war, Sweden kept winning with amazing odds yet somehow managed to lose despite winning most battles against Russia. They simple could not sustain their losses but Russia could sustain more than 4x higher losses.

Nor was Napoleon or Hitler really outwitted by brilliant Russian tactics.
