No, I kind of understand why it spread. Out of context it made it look as if we don't care about guests.

And in countries where hunger among children is a real problem, not feeding child comes across as very mean.

There is also that sense abroad that Scandinavia is this Utopian society where everybody cares about everybody. Some are a bit tired of this and love when they have a chance to knock us down a few pegs. I have seen this with other issues. There can be a bit of gloating: "Ah look at those Scandinavians, not so perfect after all, now are they!"

Especially Sweden gets hit a lot by that I notice. A lot of people really hate what social democracy stands for and love to find flaws. American conservatives have been bashing Sweden since the 1930s or so, predicting doom and gloom: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweden-bashing
