Reminds me of when Sweden fought Russia in the 1600 and 1700s. They kept kicking their asses. Swedish forced 1/4th the Russian ones kept winning repeatedly. In fact Sweden did not have to pull back because they lost battles but primarily because they could not sustain their losses even if they took much smaller losses than the Russians.

So Russia won by losing more men and more battles. They just had more men to spend than Sweden. Sweden was punching to much above its own weight.

Same deal in Winter war with Finland. Finland kept inflicting a lot more damage on Russian forces than they took but Finland is too small of a country to sustain losses.

That is the Russian game, just have more cannon fodder than the other guy.

Stalin summed up the Russian ethos: Quantity had a quality of its own.
