The potential for renewable energy is massive. You can power the whole of the US with a small corner of Nevada or Utah. A tiny fragment of the Sahara dessert could power all of Africa and Europe. The roof area needed to power a whole home with electricity is on average around 14 square meters. A regular apartment is around 80 square meters, so most people have plenty of roof space relative to how much they need.

Offshore wind alone can generate almost twice as much power as the US currently consumes. And power consumption in developed countries is generally getting lower per citizen.

So I cannot see how the argument that renewables cannot meet our needs is rooted in any kind of empirical fact about our physical surroundings and the development of our society.

I believe we should develop new nuclear technology, because it is a useful technology for a lot of things. But in no way do I beleive it is an absolute necessity. There is no factual basis to claim this.
