This is honor culure thinking which has led to very violent societies. It is how my own country, Norway used to be. Murder rate used to be sky high because the old Viking honor culture people would always stand their ground and never back down.
A small conflict would all to often escalate and nobody would back off until the other guy was dead.
The idea that you always have to stand your ground no matter what is toxic. It does not lead to safer societiese. It leads to more violence.
Frequently backing off is the better choice. It is a question of being smart. If somebody picks on you at a place and they have all their buddies around you don't start a fight right there and then. You get smart and pick a better time and place.
For the West it is much better to bid its time. The longer we wait the stronger we get and the weaker Russia gets. We can spend this time increasing production of military weapons, train our armies and prepare. Russia meanwhile is constantly getting military gear destroyed.
Our chance of winning is not diminshed by waiting. Quite the contrary it is improved. Every week that passes the Russians have fewer soldiers and fewer tanks.
