To be clear I didn’t mean that people stopped using them because they are bad but because applications increasingly are made without a need to use the file manager. Applications increasingly do a form of file management behind the scenes. Like the Mac Photos app move around images without the file manager.

Users today are simply raised to not really use of think about file management. iOS completely hid file management for years.
