US presidents did not excactly get assasinated by foreign powers, so that comparison makes no sense.

As for Archduke Ferdinand, you are being pedantic. The point is that assasinating somebody high up in a state tends to have sever consequences.

If the US vice predident e.g. has been assasinated while abroad, you can bet there would have been consequences.

When I talk about "consequences," I obviously mean negative consequences for those who initiate the assasination of Putin. Your assumption here is that the only consequences is that war is averted and Russia becomes this nice new jolly neighbour. Dream on!

Whatever Russians think about Putin, they will take offense at a foreign adversery assasinating their leader. It is not like Putin alone directs everything. He power is built on a lot of people having the same viewpoints. They would get infuriated if their head of state got assasinated and demand revenge.

I honestly don't think there will be a war. Putin is primarily trying to ramp up the pressure to get his demands through. If a foreign power such as the US decided to assasinate Putin you could bet it would almost certainly cause a war. The very thing we would like to avoid.

You don't think the Russians would not retaliate by assasinating American high ranking officials? How do you think the US would respond to the US president getting assasinated by Russia?

You think that would make America really eager to have peace? If you think so, I got some bridges to sell you.
