I never planned to write anything about the passing of Elizabeth II. Why write anything? I don’t follow royal gossip or news very much. I am not British, so the British royal family is not that important to me. Furthermore, I am not particularly fan of the British Royal family, except for perhaps Princess Diana and her son Prince Harry. From what I have read and heard, it seems like a rather dysfunctional family. But I don’t blame that entirely on the Royal family. I think the dysfunction also in large part stems from what British society expects from their Royal family and how the British media has treated the Royal family.

I think even a well-adjusted family would have become dysfunctional if it had lived for decades under the scrutiny of the sensationalist British tabloids. Ironically, I think the lionization of Elizabeth II has been part of the problem. British society has been infatuated with their Queen precisely because she did nothing but follow protocol to the letter. Always followed duty. Never offered much of any opinion or advice on anything. Yet, the way she raised her children can hardly be something to admire. Cold and distant British stiff upper lip.
