What is left and right depends on the society you live in. I kind of made a big point of that in the article.
Relative to conservatives, a liberal is of course to the political left.
In an American context, a liberal is a leftist, because the US doesn't have socialist or social democratic parties represented in government.
In Western Europe, a liberal would usually be center-right on the political spectrum as there are typically many socialist inspired parties forming the bulk of the political left.
Left and right are of course imperfect labels. Politics runs along multiple axis. But it is a useful divider when talking about views on traditional values, repsect for authority etc.
