It all began with a video clip of two mud covered American roughnecks making tubular connections. It got posted by a big Twitter account to mock the calls for gender equality. What is being implied is that girls don’t actually want gender equality, they just want cushy well-paid jobs. They want to leave the rough, physically demanding and dangerous jobs to guys.

The other suggestion is that women are simply not strong enough and cut out to do these kinds of jobs, or they are too spoiled to want to get their hands dirty.

So, what did I think of this whole debate? My initial reaction was actually more about how reckless and dangerous the full operation was. You had guys with minimal personal protection equipment handling heavy equipment made of solid steel. Some of that equipment moving pretty fast.

I have never actually been on an oil rig before, but I have worked in the Norwegian oil and service…
