Yeah it is sad, but listening to my American/Canadian wife I can understand why unions have a bad reputation in the US. From my perspective the union legislation is broken in the US. US supreme court banned in 1935 the union system which dominates Nordics and Germany where unions have actually worked well and are well respected. Instead American workers were pushed into a union system that has not worked anywhere. They have the same system in Britain and my father and Grandfather shook their head by they saw there. And my grandfather was a union representative.
The UK/US system leads to very weak unions which often are forces to action looking like sabotage to get anything through. The Nordic/Germanic model gives large federations across whole sectors of the economy which gives a lot of power. At the same time workers get free choice of union. You are not limited to one union at your workplace. If they do a shitty job, you can switch union.
