Yeah, there are a lot of stories like that to justify actions of the past.

Japan e.g. was ready to surrender on the condition that they could keep their emperor. The refused. It was claimed that nuking Japan was needed to make them surrender. But this was for unconditional surrender and this surrender mattered little in the end given that the US allowed Japan to keep their emperor anyway.

Britain and France entered WW2 on the promise to keep Poland free. Yet after the war, Poland was not free. The promise which was the key reason the war went global was never kept. Half of Europe came under Soviet rule. Yet we claimed victory.
