Yes, although how you deal with shoes varies. E.g. in the Netherlands people don't take off their shoes inside. I also don't believe Southern Europeans do it. At least I know for certain that the Portugese don't.

I don't know Minnesota that well, but I have lived in North Dakota. Despite being descendant of Norwegians, I found it quite different actually. People look Norwegian over there but they certainly don't act it.
