You are absolutely right. This was indeed intended as an upper middle class comparison. My thought was, what are the trade-offs for somebody who can choose whether they want to live in the US or Scandianvia.
The working class of America, don't typically have the option of venturing abroad. If they did I think a large portion of them would have left for a Nordic country.
And if I had made the comparison between the working classes, I would simply come across as an insufferable Scandinavian patriot. The comparison would simply have been grossly unfair, because the American working class really get the short end of the stick. When living in the US and seeing how people at the bottom get treated, I sometimes feel physically ill. I want to speak out against that, but when you are not American yourself it often comes across as being lecturing or that you are bragging about your own country and shitting on America.
Maybe it sounds cheese but I do feel empathy for the American working class and wish that some of my writing can perhaps encourge Americans to opt for a social and economic organization which caters better to all Americans, rather than just the successful ones. I know it is a fools errand, but somet things are worth doing even if you are guranteed to fail.
