I wanted to have an article to point to for people entirely new to the Unix terminal. I realized while writing it that it is actually kind of hard to cover, because it is a much bigger topic than one normally thinks about.

Just explaining say what an environment variable is actually would require a lot of more details. And in this article I also deliberately skipped talking about pipes, terminals, shells, terminal emulation etc. I realized that must go into a separate article.
